A hidden gem in the remote hills near Khao Sok National Park, the quality of golf on offer makes it worth the journey time. Hidden away in the hills near Khao Sok National Park lies Rajjaprabha Dam Golf Course, probably the best kept secret in Thai golf thanks to its remote location (requiring a ferry ride from Samui, a round here constitutes a day trip). It's a beautifully landscaped layout surrounded by dense jungles that are testament to the eco-diversity of the Thai countryside; there are some great views on offer, not least from the first tee. The course is a joy to play, assuming you like a challenge - there are some demanding holes, not least the par-3s. Even the shortest of them, the 165 yard 6th, is tough to par. From the hilltop tee you must carry a pond in front of the green whilst avoiding the bunkers behind; given the elevation change that makes judging distances tricky, this is no mean feat. Things don't get much easier on the par-5s, not least at the 542 yard 7th where your tee shot requires a 180 yard carry over a river whilst avoiding some awkwardly located bunkers in the landing zone. The next two shots are both uphill and around a dog-leg to a green sitting adjacent to a pond that has claimed many an approach. The clubhouse is basic but functional, but the local fare on offer at the restaurant is top notch, and a fitting way to round off your day trip. While it's a long journey to get there, the drive itself is particularly scenic, and overall it's worth the effort thanks to the stunning setting and enjoyable challenge on offer at Rajjaprabha Dam Golf Course.
